MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexico’s navy said on Friday it had arrested 23 people in its biggest-ever drug roundup, during which it seized about 8,400. kilograms of illicit cargo in an operation off the Southwest Pacific Coast.
“This is the largest quantity of narcotics seized during a naval operation, unprecedented in the institution’s history,” the Navy said in a statement.
The Navy also seized 8.7 thousand liters of fuel and six boats off the coast near Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan, and further south off the coast of Guerrero state.
“The 23 detainees who were read their rights, as well as six boats, suspected drugs and fuel, were handed over to the appropriate authorities for inclusion in an appropriate investigation,” the navy added.
The value of the seized assets is at least two billion pesos ($100 million), he said.
The United States pressed Mexico to increase efforts to stop drug trafficking, while Mexico pressed the United States to do more to stem the flow of firearms to criminal groups across the border with Mexico.
