(Reuters) – Stellantis said on Wednesday it was recalling 20,755 hybrid crossover SUVs in the U.S. due to brake pedal problems in affected models.
The automaker said some SUVs may have been equipped with a brake pedal that could be accidentally disengaged when pressed.
Stellantis (NYSE:) said it was aware of 15 cases worldwide, including one accident in which no injuries were reported.
The recall covers certain 2024-2025 model year Alfa Romeo Tonale plug-in hybrid SUVs and certain 2024 model year Dodge Hornet PHEV SUVs, which are based on the same platform.
The solution involves strengthening the brake pedal and will be provided free of charge, Stellantis said.
It also said that owners of affected models can also use the electronic parking brake to slow the vehicle in a controlled manner if braking power is lost.
The company also flagged affected units in other countries, including about 2,280 in Canada, 134 in Mexico and about 30,517 in some markets outside North America.
Stellantis sold a total of 15,566 Hornets and 2,737 Tonales in the U.S. this year.
