CAIRO (Reuters) – An Israeli attack on the Syrian Mediterranean port city of Latakia early on Thursday caused fires to break out there, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the fires, SANA added.
Two people were injured and private property was destroyed, state media reported, citing a military statement.
Syrian state television reported that the country’s air defenses came face to face with Israeli targets over Latakia.
Israel has been carrying out attacks on Iran-linked targets in Syria for years, but has escalated since last year’s October 7 attack on Israeli territory by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
