According to reports, El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly has passed a migration law offering accelerated citizenship to foreigners contributing Bitcoin donations for government initiatives in social and economic development. The reform was passed by the country’s legislature on December 21 with support from the Nayib Bukele-led New Ideas party and is anticipated to take effect shortly.
Bukele, a driving force behind making Bitcoin legal tender in El Salvador in September 2021, temporarily stepped down to focus on the upcoming presidential election. While the Salvadoran government has not officially confirmed the law, the National Bitcoin Office has reposted several X posts reporting the news.

The law, considered a “vital interest” for Bukele, welcomes altruistic foreign Bitcoin supporters without specifying a minimum donation requirement. This development follows El Salvador’s recent launch of the Bitcoin Freedom Visa, targeting foreign investors willing to commit $1 million in BTC or Tether.
