Brake cleaner will penetrate your o/x rings and break down the lubrication. Something I found that works famously, and won’t harm your lubrication is 100% Paraffin lamp oil. Go to Wal-Mart and ask for it. It really cleans your chain and leaves a nice paraffin lubricating coating.
